He has talked about his love for art and expressed his interest in learning more about culture in The MET .

NAMJOON’S JOURNEY TO MUSIC:

Namjoon started rapping in June 2007. He was mainly active on the underground hiphop cafe called Jungle Radio, although he did also post on the Hiphopplaya boards from time to time. The earliest known collab he did was with Changmo which was uploaded to hiphopplaya by Changmo in September 2007.

Through late 2007 and early 2008, Namjoon, along with Changmo/LUPE, were part of a crew called the “Black Pirates.” He left the group after a period of time. However he collaborated with them in 2009.

In 2008, Namjoon grew really popular in the underground scene and he used lots of names that time. Besides Runch Randa he used the names Largo and Nexist. He talked about this in Bon voyage 2.

Namjoon has deleted a lot of his past works. Most of the songs that are available on the internet are reposted by people who had his works saved. The three surviving songs he released as Largo are “LaLaLa” (a collaboration with eiyan and 201호), a song usually referred to as “녹음물/Recording” with UglyDuck (the original file name of the Uglyduck song was 08_07_04_with_Largo), and “Favorite Style” a collaboration with Yammo. “Favorite Style” is also the only song where Namjoon explicitly calls himself Largo in the lyrics. Namjoon was affectionately called Kim Runch.

The above poster is from 2009 where the 94 liners performed together . In this Namjoon’s name is Randa (he shortened his name from Runch Randa to Randa in the later years) and he’s performing as a duo along with Supreme Boi (he called himself suprema then) called FEARZ.

The evidence for the change of name from Runch Randa to Randa can be seen in the 2Kool4Skool Thanks page where he thanks fans of Runch Randa and Randa. In Cypher Part 1, he lists Randa in his list of top 5 rather than Runch Randa. The poster for the 94’s Paradise concert also shows the name change.

Namjoon has been mentioned by several artists in their songs . It usually compliments which talk about how 14 year old Namjoon was a tough competition for even older rappers .

In August 2009, Namjoon auditioned to join the Big Deal Squad. In his interview for the “Let’s Do Hip Hop” book about Korean rappers, Namjoon said that he forgot most of his lyrics when he went to perform on stage with Big Deal Squad member Dead’p.

After this audition , Sleepy asked Namjoon to meet him and bang PD in 2010 and he later joined BTS. But before that let Me tell you About a crew that Namjoon was a part of. It was called Daenamhyup. Around 2008 Namjoon and 3 of his friends, Supreme Boi, Marvel J and Kyum2 Came together to form a crew named Daenamhyup. In a February 2, 2015 interview , Marvel J said “Daenamhyup was formed when we were in the third year of middle school. Back then the members were only me, Supreme Boi , Rap Monster and Kyum2. We all lived in Bucheon and while doing music together, formed the crew. We wanted to make a fresh name, but while walking around they happened to see nonghyup (abbreviated form of NongsanhyupDongjohap, National agricultural cooperative foundation) and we thought it’d be fun to do the same thing with the crew name. That’s how we came up with DaeNamJoseonHipHopHyumDongjohap, shortened to DaeNamHyup.”

In May 2014, “The 4 Things Show” featured Namjoon as its focus. It is a look at his life, at that point in time. The theme of the episode is whether Namjoon is an Idol, a Rapper or something entirely different. During the episode, he joins his Daenamhyup friends for a brief reunion, and people share their not always favorable thoughts and opinions about Namjoon. In one part , Namjoon was asked to read comments which were disrespectful . He replied saying he will prove his abilities.

The above is a poster for the second 94 paradise concert. It’s called DaeNamHyup’s night.

In August 2011, Namjoon performed at the 3rd 94/DNH concert. This was the last underground concert he did.

Rapping was an escape from the stress i received while studying. I used to study extremely hard. Truthfully this connects with the lyrics of no more dream – when i was studying, i had no dreams. I didn’t specifically have something i wanted to do. So while promoting as bangtan, I’m sending my past self a message.

– Kim Namjoon.

In 2015, during an interview with Hiphopplaya, Namjoon talked about his pre debut days; “when i was about to just concentrate on my studies, i received a call from Untouchable’s sleepy hyung and i ended up auditioning to this company through him. At first BTS wasn’t in this kind of format. It was in the format of YG’s 1TYM, where we wouldn’t dance. That’s why I went into this group. Because they said that I would be able to rap in such a large company like this. And at that period I was also rejected from another audition at big deal records, so I was desperate. I thought i had to do this no matter what. It was the perfect company to work out my dream in wanting to confirm my existence towards more people. However as the group’s format switched to an idol group, I had a lot of confusion. I also felt really hopeless. However i ended up somehow accepting it”. And since then, Kim Namjoon has been a part of BTS; Bangtan Sonyeondan.

Namjoon wrote the debut song of BTS: no more dream. Something that Namjoon told about his experience in writing the song was ” to be honest, when I wrote the lyrics for no more dream, I received multiple rejections from Bang Shihyuk CEO. I wrote about money and a lot of other topics, but he said that it didn’t seem like our true stories. After going back and back again, I ended up being able to write what I truly felt”.

And since then, he has written about 200 songs out of which most are for BTS and also helps other groups in writing lyrics. He has 200 KOMCA credits. He once said “I’m not an idol, I’m not an artist, I’m not hop hop, not anything. I am just me. I am Rap Monster, I am Kim Namjoon. I’m just a new person . Just do what I can and keep going on my own path”.

Namjoon started his journey at the age of 13 . He wrote raps at the back of his notebooks and jotted down ideas whenever any lines or lyrics came to his mind. He went to multiple auditions and was a well known underground artist before becoming a part of BTS. Now let’s go over his pre-debut works.

Lets discuss a few of his songs in short : (I’ll add the links of each song )

Seventeen:
Rm talks about the life of a 17 years old, who everyday goes through a phase of
uncertainty about the future and the life full of challenges where our standards are judged on the basis of our education. A beginning of adulthood phase and stress and pressure of achieving our dreams and hopes. But we gotta understand that life is like that and we are the game changer. He asks us not to lose
confidence and there’s still a long way to go. The future is bright so dream again and do not stop finding yourself.

Freestyle 3:
This song was released a few months before their debut and the lyrics tell us
about how bangtan came together and all about their trainee period. He’s thankful to the company that they met and made such a good
team BTS. He’s excited for the debut but at the same time a little insecure about the future of the group but he believes them and wishes that the group will shine brightly someday.

Freestyle 2:
RM tells about his trainee journey, the reality he faced as he walks on the path  to fulfil his dream of being a rapper. He describes how the music and him are connected and that he believes, he can heal and give strength to people through music.

Grey City:
The song talks about the bitter truth of this world, how this world tries to break you and is cold towards you. They are never compassionate but always
misunderstands you and makes your path more struggling.

Glory:
In glory, RM talks about his harsh struggle in his journey of becoming a rapper. The way people threw hate towards him for his music. But music and he were destined. According to a Korean tradition, during the child’s first birthday celebration, he/she sits at a table, and in front of them various items are kept.
It is said that whatever they choose tells about their future. So in this Namjoon mentions that he chose a pencil which means his future is linked to music.

Where u at :
Where u at speaks about teenage life, where students are often concerned about their future. It focuses on topics like self doubts, insecurity,  guilt, and the struggle to find oneself. It speaks about How challenges are making us exhausted and how we’re still figuring out whether we are good for this world or not. The path is still unknown.

Freestyle 4:
In this world full of struggle, pain and cruelty, RM thinks about his childhood where everything seems simple and happy. He wishes to go back to that time and enjoy all the joyful moments in the past. The world has become so cold to him and it’s difficult to go back to that time again, but somewhere he still
wishes to go there and dream again without thinking about the future.

Can we:
RM here, talks about the heartbreak he is going through. He writes this song in the form of a breakup note which he wants to give to his ex/past partner, though he thinks it’s of no use now. In the note he writes how he wishes to tell his ex/past partner how much he loves them but he’s also hurt by the words of his ex/past partner. He tells even after all these, somewhere he felt and understood his ex/past partner’s feelings. He  adds that he doesn’t want to be like those pathetic men after breakups and says a final goodbye.

As you can see , Namjoon has written and worked on so many songs before debuting in BTS. He’s truly a musical Prodigy in all senses.

The witty exploitation of the meanings and ambiguities of words, especially in puns is called a Wordplay . If you’ve gone through Kim Namjoon’s works you would notice he has used a lot of Wordplays into his lyrics. Namjoon is known for his instant wordplays and at times he also changes the flow and lyrics during concerts. He’s also really good at freestyle raps and he’s showcased this ability in a few episodes of problematic men, a show in which participants had to solve various questions and their IQ, General knowledge and their fast thinking abilities were tested . Namjoon was the youngest participant in the show and he was a part of the show for the first 21 episodes.

Coming back to wordplays, Namjoon’s wordplays aren’t just mere combinations of words. His wordplays are quite exceptional because of the way he takes two simple words and creates a beautiful metaphor out of them. Lets go over some of his wordplays .

In telepathy , Namjoon says “oh can i be your bibilly hills like you did the same for me”. “Bibil” means “leaning on” . Bibilly hills was a Wordplay for Beverly hills . When Namjoon says he wants to be our bibilly hills , he tells us he wants us to consider him as our friend during the tough times and lean on him when things are tough.

In the song waste it on me he tells “treat me like a comma, I’ll take you to a new phase”. Basically a full stop is something thats used to put an end to something . However a comma signifies a new beginning or a continuation of a path so when Namjoon asks us to treat him like a comma, he means that he will take us to a new path.

In trivia love Namjoon says “I’m just a person. You erode all my edges and turn me into love” now to understand this Wordplay, you need to know the Korean word for person and love. 사람 and 사랑. The words are exactly the same except for the final character. When you “erode the sharp edges” of the square letter ㅁ, you get the round letter ㅇ.

In love maze Namjoon says “Love is a maze but damn you is amaze” . He’s done this Wordplay by combining “a” and “maze” . Love is complicated hence he calls it a maze. But at the same time he calls his partner amazing or amaze. So he says even though love is a maze, he’s ready to go through it cuz his partner is amaze/amazing.

In 134340, Namjoon says “Us is just a plural of U” . So basically whenever we add the letter S to the end of the word , it becomes plural. But in this he says , “Us” signifying him and his partner is just a plural of “U” in which he refers to his partner.

In seoul town road Namjoon says “i got the homis in my bag, have you heard of that ? Homis made of steel from Korea they the best. ” At first “homis”was confused with the word “homies” but actually homis in Korean means a steel Korean farming tool that’s become popular around the world . So Namjoon was actually referring to the farming tool that he carries in his bag .

One of the best wordplays done by Namjoon can be seen in the song ddaeng. He uses this word according to different meanings with different contexts as an onomatopieia. At first he uses it as a cashier sound, then uses it as the name of a game called tag, then as a way he addresses swollen faces of haters in one of the versus. Ddaeng can also be the sound of a bell or a word used when someone’s wrong. It’s also used to refer poor combination of cards and at the end he uses the word “thang” to rhyme with ddaeng which is another way of saying “thing”.

Namjoon is well known for using beautiful wordplays but at the same time he’s also known for the metaphors he uses in his songs. One of the most common metaphors he’s used is the way he talks about the sun or sunlight in two of his songs ; moonchild and 4 O’Clock. In moonchild namjoon says “Can’t breathe in the sunlight, gotta hide your heart.” And in 4 O’Clock he says “the sun suffocates me, the world strips me naked. I can’t help it, there’s no other way. I collect my shattered self beneath the moonlight”.

The sun is usually signified as something that brings hope, energy and happiness but Namjoon uses it in a different way. Namjoon thinks of sun as something that brings out his inner hidden flaws in the open and makes him feel uneasy and uncomfortable . He feels exposed and uneasy. On the other hand, he feels calm and at peace in the moonlight. Looking at the moon he feels like there’s someone out there who appreciates and loves him for his flaws as afterall even the moon has black patches which could be called scars or flaws.

In 2017, Namjoon released a song called “change” in collaboration with American rapper Wale. In this song, RM critiques the society he grew up in, talking about its hierarchical nature in depth. He also touches upon the dark side of social media.

For me, I talked about Korea, my problems, and about those on Twitter who kill people by keyboards.

-Kim Namjoon in 2017 for Teen Vogue.

Another song that deserves a lot of appreciation is winter flower by Younha ft RM. This song talks about the blooming of a winter flower and how despite all the harsh difficulties, Namjoon says he’ll be there beside when it blooms. He talks about how everyone has their own share of difficulties in life but these words aren’t a source of comfort to someone who is going through a tough time. It’s based on ” life is full of paradoxes, all you gotta do is get used to the marathon” . It talks about how after every end there’s a new beginning . So you just gotta wait and be patient and one day, you’ll bloom.

Intro: persona is a song where Namjoon tries to find himself. It’s a song wherein he asks questions regarding his identity and tries to find himself amidst the various personas.  The video as well as the song has a close connection to Jung’s psychology . Jung’s psychology talks about shadow and persona being connected to each other helping someone to identify themselves. He uses elements like shadow, ego and persona which are one of the three elements of Jung’s psychology.

Namjoon uses a metaphor called “pigs and dogs” . This metaphor traces back to the time when the song “am i wrong” was released . In this song, BTS talked about the images people try to create – the jingoism of dogs and pigs who don’t understand the value of resources provided to them. He says that he doesn’t know whether he’s a dog or a pig but then some ppl come and put the pearl necklace on him .

He uses a lot of elements like mannequins, mirrors and shadow to talk about persona and then finally the video ends up with all the mannequins shattering to bits. this could be read as the self or ego standing amidst all the personas and finally destroying the masks, leaving the self out in the open.

This is a few out of the hundreds of metaphors and wordplays that Namjoon has used in his songs. He’s an exceptional songwriter and is a lyrical genius.

PLAYLISTS BY NAMJOON

Namjoon has dropped two mixtapes or playlists(as he likes to call it) over the years. The first one is titled “RM” and it’s an autobiographical journey of Kim Namjoon from an underground rapper named runch rada to an idol rapper named Rap monster. It covers his journey from the year 2015-2018. Mono, the second playlist of Namjoon is a continuation of this journey of namjoon as RM which shows Namjoon in a more gentle, and calm manner. The songs in mono talk about life struggles and thoughts but in a more peaceful way as compared to the first mixtape RM.

“RM” focuses on how he became an Idol rapper. At that time he used to keep changing names (as discussed above) and he went through a lot of confusion regarding his identity as talked about in his song intro: persona. The mixtape starts with the song Voice and consists of a total 11 songs ; voice, Do you, awakening, monster, throw out, joke, monsterlude, rush, life, drift, i believe.

It takes you on a journey of how Namjoon first talks about how he wrote rap on the last page of his notebooks , and how he went on to follow his dreams during which a lot of his colleagues left him and criticised him heavily and degraded his decisions and even thought he wouldn’t make it big as an idol rapper. It ends with I believe in which he talks of how life consists of both good and bad and a balance of both is very essential.

“It isn’t these words, wordplay, it’s just a war play the world plays..Again we fight just like soldiers, everyday”. he questions himself whether he will be able to face the cold world. He asks if he will have someone with him during his times of failure . The album shows how he’s actively fighting the stigmas of the industry and his own securities. Namjoon is seen juggling the meaning of happiness, his purpose in life, and how everything about being alive fits together.

In an interview in 2015 with Hiphopplaya , he talks about his first mixtape “RM” and about his inner thoughts , confusion and loneliness. He said “there are many . Why do you do smoky makeup ? Why do you try to act pretty on your broadcast ??? Etc . For hip hop where purity is important and masculinity plays a huge part, i believe it’s definitely a critique that could come out. So from some point, my self consciousness has been divided in half. The reason why the cover for my mixtape is divided into black and white is to show my two faced self. I believe there’s no improvement if you have an inferiority complex and victim mentality. I decided on the thought that i can only find myself once i can admit to myself and approve that both sides are sides of myself”.

in the April 2015 edition of “Singles” magazine, Namjoon said “my music is something that just shows the inner darkness, worries, greed, hideous, etc. That i have. Everything about myself that’s inside of me…. It’s very two faced, lonely, being lonely, wanting to be lonely, hurting because of being lonely, but that i don’t dislike loneliness because of that …. It has my inner self wandering around, i think any person is two faced, where they can be a devil and an angel … And i think the person who has both sides to the extreme is me”.

Namjoon’s mixtape RM showcases all the sides of him. It takes you from sadness, to frustration and anger, to acceptance and to finally achieving satisfaction and realising happiness and sadness are two sides of a coin .

I hope the tendency to belittle individuality or a person’s unique way of expression will change. I think how people do their hair or what they wear is up to a person’s taste. Hair and clothes? Aren’t the things totally unrelated to what a person actually needs to philosophize over?

-Kim Namjoon

The second mixtape of Namjoon is titled “mono”. There are seven songs in the mixtape this album focuses more on accepting oneself , and embracing your dark times wholeheartedly. It has a calming and a more peaceful rhythm and tone as compared to RM.

The album begins with the song “Tokyo” which talks about life. Namjoon says how life sometimes isn’t something that you can express completely and talks about how he was a pinnochio before but now he’s grown and matured. This album focuses more about namjoon’s life from 2018-2021. He feels like love and hate have the same meaning. He has expressed this thought in seoul as well as tokyo. In the next song titled “Seoul” he shares his feelings about the capital of South Korea. Namjoon expresses his bittersweet relationship with Seoul and also tells if love and hate mean the same thing then “i hate you seoul”.

Moonchild is one of the most popular song from the album mono. As i said before, Namjoon felt discomfort in being exposed to sunlight. He felt like all his flaws were left in the open and he felt like an open book. He felt uneasy and restless in the sun . But in moonchild, he emphasises on how he feels at ease during the dark. He says “moonchild, you shine, when moon rise it’s your time”. He compares his flaws to the dark patches of the moon and tells us how our flaws might be the reason someone appreciates and admires us more.

Badbye is a title which is formed with the combination of the words “bad” and “goodbye”. This song has repetitive lines which make the listener feel comforted . Badbye is just the opposite of the word goodbye.  Even though Namjoon feels the one he loves and him aren’t meant for each other, he doesn’t feel like saying goodbye. It’s a song having a mixture of sadness as well as comfort with unique music.

Uhgood is a song that is titled in a positive way but is actually a deep song filled with emotions of sadness and emptiness. It compares the idealistic way in which namjoon aspires to be and the reality. In the VLive where Namjoon talked about the process of making ‘mono’ and the story behind each track, he said ‘uhgood’ was supposed to be ‘Reflection’ in ‘Wings’ but he saved it for later. Namjoon talked about how this track is very heartbreaking to him and he has many memories attached to it. He expresses how he feels disappointed with himself at times and questions whether he can be the idealistic version of Namjoon that he has envisioned. “I still want to cross that two bridges To reach myself To the real me”. It shows the feeling of being left out, being hurt by expectations, and how he feels the namjoon his thoughts is flawless . But yet he decides not to give up on himself and work towards being idealistic.

Everythingoes is a song that talks about how every pain, every sadness eventually goes . It’s important to feel the emotions of pain so it’s easy to move on completely from them . Every pain gets healed with time . That’s the base of the song. Forever rain is a song that compares rain as something that’ll bude tears or sadness that Namjoon feels. He feels like the rain is his friend that knocks on his window when times get tough . Like is aid, he felt discomfort in the sunlight but with the rain, he feels like his tears can be hidden if it rains forever. The music video is in black and white to show rain as a dejected state of mind and to show confusion. Mono is an album that shows the raw emotions of Namjoon but in a calming tone.

Hey everyone!! Namjoon has been one of my biggest inspirations. His musical range is pretty crazy. Whether it’s the number of genres he’s explored or the way he writes lyrics, it’s beautiful. His music is a thick blanket during the cold moments of life. It’s a shield that’ll protect you from feeling lonely in this big world, it’s an invisible hand that’ll grab your hand and pull you out from darkness and show you that rainbows truly do exist at the end of a dark tunnel. He’s someone who makes me believe that there’s still goodness in the world. Kim Namjoon is more than just a musician to me. He’s my bestfriend. He’s someone who makes me feel happy about waking up to the next day. He motivates and pushes me to do my best and be the best version of myself. This website is something that i wanted to do to spread his beautiful musical legacy to many people across the world. His pre debut works are an important part of his journey cuz that was the beginning. It was the point where it all began. His pre debut works act as the foundation of his musical journey. His playlists express and showcase his various sides and shades of his personality. It shows his raw emotions and brings out his hidden feelings in the form of musical tones and beats.

Kim Namjoon’s works are great but Kim Namjoon as a person, as a human is greater and even more beautiful.
